Written by Vicky Katsarova | Nov 10, 2015

Are you looking for an adventure off the usual tourist track? There are many things to do when you visit Bulgaria as you can enjoy 220 miles of coastline, varied and fascinating scenery, rich biodiversity, and warm and friendly people. This Balkan nation is bordered on the north by Romania, on the west by Serbia and Macedonia, on the south by Greece and Turkey, and on the east by the Black Sea.

Tourism in Bulgaria - Things to do?

Cuisine

If you enjoy Greek cuisine, you'll probably enjoy Bulgarian cuisine with its strong similarities. In fact, yogurt and feta cheese are part of almost every Bulgarian meal. Bulgarian farmers grow lots of great, exceptionally tasty vegetables. That might be why they love their salads, as they enjoy a wide variety of them in Bulgarian cuisine. They serve vegetables in other ways, too. One popular appetizer is Tarator, a cold cucumber soup made with cucumbers, yogurt, crushed walnuts, and dill.

Of course, you'll want to enjoy some of the country's famous wine with your meals. Because of Bulgaria's diverse climate and soils, a wide variety of grapes grow there. It's famous for its wine exports and was the second largest exporter of wine in the world up until 1989. For those who are a little more adventurous, try Rakia. It's a fruit brandy Bulgarians have enjoyed since the 14th century and that many consider the national drink.

The Nature of the Country

Bulgaria's topography varies from towering Alpine peaks to the sunny coast of the Black Sea. According to Wikipedia, there are "three national parks, 11 nature parks and 17 biosphere reserves." Forests cover approximately 35% of Bulgaria and offer plenty of hiking trails, some of the oldest trees in Europe, and excellent wildlife viewing opportunities. In fact, this country has some of the richest biodiversity of any European country. If you're very lucky, you may even spot an eastern imperial eagle or Eurasian lynx!
